WE ARE 5 YEARS OLD!!!
10/18/07

I can't believe how time flies!! Five years ago the EC was just opening its doors and we didn't know what the future held for us. Not only have we made some great and long lasting friendships along the way but we've seen some kick ass music! I want to say thanks to Central NY and to the rest of the world for making the EC what it is today!

Now that I'm on the subject of being open for five years, I want to personally invite you to our annual Anniversary/Halloween party on Saturday, October 27th. Entertainment is brought to you in part by our good friends from Syracuse UNDER THE GUN w/ opening act Joe Alteri from Brand New Sin. This is an 80's themed party, so break out your parachute pants, stone washed jeans or come dressed like the Doc from Back to the Future. We are going to have a costume contest, many freaks, prizes, giveaways and many musical surprises. If you are going to the Breakin Benjamin's, Seether and 3 Days Grace show at the Utica Aud that night, hold on to your ticket stub and present it to our door guy and that will get you a free Utica Club. Don't be surprised if you see any of those bands hanging at the EC that night. It's going to be a night you won't forget or maybe you will cause in all honesty I really can't remember our previous Anniversary/Halloween parties.

We are going to be celebrating Halloween twice this year. Join us on the actual spooky day Wednesday, Oct. 31 for the Halloween Hoe.down w/ Woodenspoon. No cover and dress as freaky as possible. 9pm show time.

EC finally has an open mic night every Tuesday night!! Throughout the five years many people have been asking us to have an open mic night. We put a lot of thought into this cause we don't want to host a typical open mic night, we want to take it over the top. So I called in some troops: I present to you Hans Device. Hans Device is a kick ass guitar player and his back up band is top notch, featuring Mr. Tom Moore on slide guitar, Andy DeLaubell and Matt Ryan on bass. I'm also calling out all the local musicians and my rock star friends to come down and let's jam. A typical Tuesday night crowd pleasers is the Rainbow Young Orchestra. Enough said! EVERY TUESDAY EC OPEN MIC NIGHT!!! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

Recommended upcoming shows: Sam Kininger 10/19 ... Dub is a Weapon 10/26 ... Halloween/Anniversary party w/ Under the Gun 10/27... Eclectic Collective w/ Rhubarb 11/3 ... Lynch 11/10 ... Choke Slam w/ Panty Raid night before Thanksgiving Celebration 11/21 ... and a ton more for December including the long-awaited return of Ryan Montbleau Band.

This just in ... The Breakfast @ the EC on New Years Eve!! More details coming real soon.

Thanks again for making the EC the best live music venue in Central NY!!!

February 13 2007

Ahhhh the beautiful lights … and thanks to YOU we finally have new lights! For over a year now we've been collecting donations from you fine people of the area to get our stage lights going. The day finally arrived and we've got a pretty cool looking light show. Thanks to the EC faithful, you people rock!

I want to personally send out congratulations to John Naegele. As many of you know Naegele has been a fixture at the Electric Co. since its inception. Last year we promoted him to front end manager and he took that duty on full board -- cleaning up the joint, installing our lights, placing orders and pretty much doing the stuff I didn't want to do. Well our good buddy has parlayed what he learned here and is taking on responsibilities at the Matt Brewing Co. He's going to be dearly missed around here! Thanks kid for everything. The Brewery is lucky to have you on their team! Naegele's last night behind the bar is Saturday, Feb. 10th. Stop in and wish him luck.

Heads up announcement- Utica's St. Patty's day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 10th – not on March 17th like the rest of the cities in the US. Utica is known for throwing some great parties and that is why we have the 2nd largest St. Patty's day parade in New York State, second only to New York City. We will be hosting our normal kick-ass party here all day on March 10th. So what is going on for the actual St. Patty's Day you ask? THE BREAKFAST!!! That's right you heard me correct: The Breakfast will be in full effect on March 17, 2007. What a better way to celebrate the Irish holiday!! I'm not telling you to pace yourself but pace yourselves on this day.

Great shows coming up- SeepeopleS, Ryan Montbleau, Tim Reynolds, Fluttr Effect, Under the Gun, and a fun 4/20 party is in the works with Buddhahood. Make sure to keep up to date with upcoming shows on the EC Calendar.

January 1 2007 - Happy New Year!!

What a kick ass party we had going into the New Year!  Ryan Montbleau and the boys brought the house down; everyone looked great all decked out in 1970's outfits and we set another mark in the EC history books.  Thanks to everyone for showing their love and support in 2006 and cheers to continuing in .007.  Thanks to the Red Roof Inn, Tim Hardiman, Tom and Kara Baggot and of course the Ryan Montbleau Band.

In other news, for about a year and a half, we have been taking donations for our stage lights.  Well Santa hooked us up phat this year.  Thanks to the EC faithful, we finally got our stage lights!!!  Thank you, thank you and thank you for all the donations over the past year and a half.  It makes an enormous difference on our stage and it just adds to the show.    Hats off to you Utica and CNY!!

Stop in before every Utica College Men's Hockey game.  UC @ the EC.  $1.50 pints of Saranac and free tickets to the game (while supplies last).

Mindwrite Music presents a Tribute to Abe Schecter Saturday, January 27 starting at 2pm.  DJ's will be spinning, food, door prizes and much more as we pay tribute to a great local hip hop artist.  $20 donation at the door.

November 1 2006,
First off, thanks to everyone that showed up to our Anniversary/Halloween party back on Oct. 28th! There were some great costumes, tons of fun and definitely a night I will never forget. Thanks to Rhubarb and Peter Prince and Moonboot Lover for rockin the house! Congrats to Chris McNamara for winning the costume contest – his costume was Walter Sobchak from the Big Lewbowski. He played the role quite well.

Look for us to update the website soon to include photographs from the Halloween party as well as tons of other great EC parties throughout the year.

Setting the clocks back is a reminder that the holidays are just around the corner. My oh my ain't it funny how time flies. As fall fades away winter kicks in and that only means one thing in these parts - hockey! Utica College hockey, that is! My good friend Gary Heenan and his boys are ready to tear the ECAC West apart, team by team. Make sure to check the UC hockey schedule for upcoming home games, always a good time at the Aud! Come hang out with your friends from the EC in section 116 and 117. We like to torment the other team. First home game is Friday, November 3rd at 7pm.

Lots of great shows coming up. Check out Jamie Mclean from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on Friday, 11/17. Also a pre-Thanksgiving benefit w/ the Lomeo Brothers and Playin Again (formally Sunshine). This show will benefit the Abraham house for Hospice care. Part of the door proceeds will go directly to the Abraham house. We will be also open on Thanksgiving night. Look for the highly anticipated return of the Buddhahood on 11/25 and Under the Gun on the 1st of Dec.

Here's a secret that I can spill: Sunday, Dec. 31st. The EC's New Years Eve party w/ Ryan Montbleau Band. More info on this and other show coming soon. Now go tell your friends!

October 5, 2006
The Electric Company proudly announces our 4th Anniversary/Halloween party on Saturday, October 28th.  Come dressed in your spankiest costume: it's time for all the freaky people to come out and celebrate the Electric Company's anniversary!!!  We have a kick ass party in store for our 4 year milestone.  Rhubarb + Peter Prince and Moonboot Lover = Rocketship to party pain.  Costume contest will be in full effect this year.  We will be sending someone home with a $100 bar tab or the winner can use it up on the 28th.  Plenty of giveaways, musical surprises, drink specials, plenty of freaks and lasting memories.  Party starts at 9pm.

Join us after the Bob Weir and Ratdog show at the Stanley Theater on November 4th as the EC presents Godfather of the acid jazz guitar Melvin Sparks.  Melvin will be hitting the stage immediately after Rat Dog is finished with their show.  $2 off admission w/ Bob Weir and Rat Dog ticket stub.  $3 bombs all night long and some groovy ass music man.  Over the last thirty years he has played with some of Jazz's greatest musicians: David "Fathead" Newman, Lou Donaldson, Hank Crawford, Reuben Wilson and John Patton (are amongst the many). During the 1970s, Sparks backed up Lou Donaldson on the Funk-Jazz classics "Everything I Play Is Funky" and "Hot Dog".  He continues to perform with the greats of this genre such as Leon Spencer Jr., Mike Clark and Idris Mohammed and is now breaking out his legendary guitar wizardry with many younger bands and artists such as Galactic, The Greyboy Allstars, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Derek Trucks and Robert Walter's 20th Congress.

Other news one of our local favs. The Reuben James is releasing a new CD entitled "A Room with Two Gravities".  Their CD release party is going to be held at the EC on Saturday, October 14th.  Showtime 10pm.

Thanks for supporting the Electric Company and independent music for the last few years!

Please be responsible and make sure there's always a designated driver.

See on you Varick St!

December 22 2005
Happy New Year!
Not only am I really looking forward to the upcoming New Year, but also I'm pumped that my sports teams are looking great this year.   The Giants are most definitely going to make the playoffs.  The NY Rangers are putting together an incredible year.  I and most Ranger fans didn't expect it.  Jager is on his way on having a his best year to date and the UC hockey team is looking young but tough enough to give anyone in the ECAC West fits.  Hockey is back!!!  A few weeks back Johnson, BK, Julio and I went to see the Sabres and Devils -- not only did we get to hang with Mark from Rhubarb in the Budweiser box, but also BK proceeded to pass out in a nice kick back lounge chair.   We are bringing him up slowly if you couldn't tell.  Thanks for the hook up Mark!

Enough of the sports rant...... This upcoming New Year's is going to mark our fourth New Year’s at the EC.  The previous New Year's parties have definitely marked some memorable moments.  Like me singing "Shout at the Devil"  w/ Electric Blue and the Kozmik Truth (god how I miss them somes of bitches!) … the wheel of fortune at last year's party … and me and the crew about three minutes late for the countdown in 2003.  My life is on a delay if you haven't noticed.   This upcoming party is going to be nothing short of the three previous.  We have one incredible band coming to entertain the masses this year: BUDDHAHOOD!  Laura and I were discussing on what to do this year and she suggested we have a Mardi Gras party in tribute to New Orleans.   Wow, what a great idea and I have the best band to fill our stage for that kind of a theme: BUDDHAHOOD.  Check them out www.thebuddhahood.com.  Last time here they started out their second set in marching band style.  They combine rock with roots and traditional world music, reggae, all stirred up with some funk and ska.  They are a nine-piece musical ensemble guarantee to get you moving from the opening note.   Let me say it again cause I'm so excited and I just can't hide it: BUDDHAHOOD WILL BE HERE FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE!

This is all going down Saturday, Dec. 31.  It won’t be one of those pay $20 at the door type of New Year's parties either.   $7 will get you into the door, costumes, beads, food, giveaways, balloon drop, champagne toast and BUDDHAHOOD.  I'm encouraging everyone to come dressed in Mardis gras masquerade costumes.  There will be some on hand but I don't think I have enough for everyone.

Thanks to everyone for supporting independent music at the Electric Company and here's to more years to come.

Old hops turn hip: Utica Club cool again
Your father's beer brewing cult-like following with young drinkers

UTICA — Anthony Donaldson has a history with Utica Club.
His parents drink it. It's the No. 1 selling brew at his bar, The Electric Company. And, it's the first beer he ever tasted.

"The people my age probably remember stealing it from their parents when they were kids, like I used to," said Donaldson, 30. "I have friends that have tattoos of Utica Club. It's like a cult by now."

Call it a cult, or even a club, the fact is the hometown-brewed premium Pilsener lager connects generations of beer drinkers, yet hasn't had a significant marketing push in more than 40 years. But Matt Brewing Co. Vice President Fred Matt said the brand has seen "double-digit growth" over the past year.

"I always say UC has become so bogus it's hip," said Matt, 45.

Once a big seller in the Northeast, the flagship beer was down to selling 100,000 cases annually just a few years ago. Most drinkers were age 55 and older.
The beer's revival can be credited largely to groups of 20-something hipsters who view all things retro as cool, Matt said.

Donaldson agrees.
"Trends come back," he said, "like the '80s or stonewashed jeans."
Or oversized "Jackie O" sunglasses and '70s-style sneakers.

John Naegele, 26, likes Utica Club so much he has it tattooed on his chest. As he unbuttoned his blue-and-white striped oxford shirt, exposing the ink with a bright UC on his sternum, Naegele, who is a bartender at The Electric Company, said he drinks the beer because "it's delicious."

"Utica Club is Utica," said Naegele of Marcy. "It's the last thing we have of the glory days of this city. If you're going to drink a pilsner beer, it better be from your hometown."

"Young people today are less impacted by national advertising," Matt said. "They're more favorably disposed to products and items they kind of discover themselves."

But despite the newly found Utica Club subculture, Matt says dedicated customers have forever loved Utica Club. The current slogan, "Taste it again ... for the first time," just might say it all.

"We've always had a loyal Utica Club audience," he said. "As that audience got older, you watched your sales dip. But we've maintained the Utica Club loyalty and are now replenishing the brand with loyal Utica Club people."

Rich White is one of those "replenishing" the brand that proudly touts being the "first beer sold after prohibition." Matt said White is also part of the group defying an old industry saying.

"There's an old adage in the beer business: 'You don't drink what your father drank,'" Matt said.

White said his father and grandfather drink Utica Club, but that's not why he likes it. And it won't deter him from drinking it, either.

"I started buying it because it's cheap, and I started liking it" said White, who turned 21 in July. "It doesn't taste like you're drinking water, and you've got to support the local economy."

White of Utica is a senior at Le Moyne College in Syracuse and says not many of his college friends drink the beer, but about 75 percent of his friends in Utica do.

"I like it because it's unique to have a beer from your own town," White said. "I think it's special and carries some history — it says so right on the bottle."

Matt said people drink the beer because its quality is second to none and it's made in Utica.

"People feel it's not only a great beer, but a tremendous value and 'It's my own,'" he said.

Steve Klosek couldn't agree more.

"It's my beer," said Klosek, who owns The Varick, The Stiefvater Room and Sickenberger Lane on Varick Street.

Klosek said 50 is the average age of customers in his three taverns, and Utica Club is a favorite of his patrons.

"Everybody drinks it," he said. "From age 70 to 25, they all drink it."

Rich Kiersnowski, who owns the Finger Bullet in Utica, said he's always had a loyal Utica Club following — and he's been doing business with the brewery for more than 30 years.

"The older generation has always been the ones to drink Utica Club, but as time goes by, the younger generation has realized what a great taste it has at a reasonable price," Kiersnowski said.

Matt credits his late uncle, Frank Owens Jr., with developing a brand that never gets old. It was under Owens' direction the Schultz and Dooley "spokesmugs" were created in 1959.

Owens joined the West End Brewing Co. in 1955 as assistant advertising manager before going on to become vice president of advertising for many years. He died in 2004.

"We don't really have to recreate the wheel," Matt said. "We just dust off what Frank did years ago. What he did has a life of it's own that transcends all generations."

Commercials of the talking beer steins — Schultz with his rich German accent and Dooley with a hearty Irish brogue — became increasingly popular in America from the late '50s to early '60s.

The last Schultz and Dooley commercial aired in 1965, and 40 years later, the original German-made ceramic steins, which once sold for $9.95 a pair, now sell for $800 to $1,500 as collectibles.

"There's a lot of products that are multi-generational," Matt said. "The fun thing about Utica Club is it's having this rejuvenation and it's coming back to life."

October 2005
I can't believe how time flies! Can you believe that the EC has been in full effect for three years now? As we approach our anniversary/Halloween party this coming Saturday night, I remember our very first day of business. We had maybe twenty bottles of liquor, at best five kegs of beer and no Jaeger (Imagine the EC without Jaeger). It was Halloween night 2002, we were so busy running around trying to get everything ready for that night, that a costume didn't even cross my mind. Fast forward three years and we've become something that even I couldn't imagine – that is a place where friends gather, bands rock and people come to enjoy themseleves in the most comfortable atmosphere. I do hope that you can join us for our upcoming Halloween/Anniversary party on Saturday, October 29th. Come help us celebrate what Laura, Matt and I have created. Make sure when you are here to thank Laura for everything she's done for the EC, cause if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be typing this damn blog. In the years that I've known her, she's been a great leader, smart business partner (she's the brains in this whole opperation), and even more so a great friend. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you Laura and Matt for making my dreams come true!

Now back to the bash and what a bash it’s going to be! Ryan Montbleau www.ryanmontbleau.com and rhubarb www.rhubarbsucks.com will be the entertainment for the evening. Rhubarb has been with us since day one. They are a great friend to the EC and have made some memoriable moments for us. If you can recall last year's Halloween party rhubarb played Iron Maiden's "Run To the Hills" and I remember thinking to myself that the floor was going to come out from underneath us ‘cause the house was rocking! You can be sure that they will bust something out that's going to blow your mind for this year's Halloween party. Ryan Montbleau I'm proud to say is another great friend to the EC. His first gig here at the EC was in front of Me, Laura, Damon, Joe Sweet, Bubba and maybe one or two more people in attendence that magical night. Now he has blossomed into this "god-like rock-star" persona for our regulars. This boy has got it going on! He's going to be one of those people that, five years from now, I will get to say you saw him here first. Mark my words! Oh yeah, there's going to be a costume contest too. $100 to the winner. Previous winners were: Dee Snyder, Marge Simpson and a picnic table. The costume contest is without a doubt that is my favorite part of the whole halloween/anniversary party!

I think I'm done rambling, I'm not the best writer in the world, in fact I almost didn't graduate high school cause of my writing skills.

Before I go, one quick plug for my boy Todd Hunter: the Second Annual Eternal Images Tattoo and Art Expo is this weekend – Saturday and Sunday, October 29th & 30th at the Ramada Inn in New Hartford, New York. The show features tons of artists, a tattoo competition, and music from Ryan Montbleau (acoustic), Peter Prince and Joe Sweet. I'll be there getting inked by Phelps on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. So stop by and say what's up and come check out the freaks. www.toddhunterseternalimagestattoo.com

The Electric Company vs. The Breakfast:  Round One- -
It's no secret The Breakfast has carved a remarkable niche for itself in the live music scene.  The band's improvisational skills as a sum are matched only by the technical prowess of its parts.
But are they ready to stir things up with a wheel challenge?
The Breakfast returns to The Electric Company (Utica, New York) on Thursday, April 21 as part of its 35-city CD release party tour.  Their new release "Real Radio" is now available at music stores nationwide.
But if you've ever visited our fair city, you know we do things a little differently in Utica.
We have been pondering some creative uses for a roulette-style wheel we inherited at The Electric Company.  So far its highest use hasnât progressed much farther than as a conversation piece, with a few spins by our friends testing psychic abilities.  Now its true purpose has come to light: an innovation in improvisation.
The concept is pretty straightforward: we create a template with 30 songs by The Breakfast to insert over the wheel.  We spin the wheel, and The Breakfast plays the song it lands on.  At the end of each song, we spin the wheel for the next song.  Pretty simple, right?
We can't possibly let them get off that easy.  A band like The Breakfast should be up for a more daunting trial, and we're just the venue to do it.  The twist comes during the second set when we spin the wheel mid-song, forcing the band to conjure up a nimble segue into the next song.  It's the ultimate test of improv · our minds are dizzy with the unpredictable and endless possibilities.  And we like dizzy. Will the wheel of fortune smile on The Breakfast?  Our money is riding on "hell yeah."  Certainly the fate of the fans is sealed: another explosive evening with The Breakfast. You know what they say: the house always wins. Witness the Wheel Challenge with The Breakfast on Thursday, April 21 at The Electric Company, 700 Varick Street, Utica, NY.  Showtime 10PM, tickets $8, 21+ only.
